Gynecological care for women of all ages
Women’s Specialists of Plano offers annual gynecology exams – an important key to maintaining health.
Caring for patients begins with routine age-appropriate preventative care, including:
- Breast exam
- Contraceptive counseling
- Colposcopy
- Pap smear
- Pelvic exam
Treatment for abnormal pap smear
Most results from pap tests come back negative, meaning the cervix is healthy. If the result is abnormal, it could mean several things, including:
- Cells appear abnormal but are not cancerous. In this case a follow-up exam is scheduled.
- There is an infection – such as yeast, chlamydia or gonorrhea – causing the cells to appear inflamed.
- The presence of human papillomavirus (HPV). There are many types, some of which cause genital warts, which are associated with cervical cancer.
When an infection is present, it is dealt with immediately and another test is scheduled for two to three months later. The American Cancer Society recommends an annual pelvic exam, including a pap smear. Early detection is the best way to prevent cervical cancer.
Adolescent gynecology services
Women’s Specialists of Plano provides care and emotional support for children and adolescents, including treatment for genetic malformations and other disorders. Some issues may be from problems present at birth, while others can develop as a child grows. Our doctors prioritize care and support for young patients with these conditions:
- Congenital malformations
- Adolescent developmental disorders
- Abnormal vaginal discharge or bleeding
- Vaginal skin conditions
- Ovarian cysts
Mammography
Regular breast screenings can provide early detection of cancer. Studies show they can reduce breast cancer deaths by more than a third. Three-dimentional images are taken of each breast to visualize the internal structure. This screening is recommended annually for women age 40 and older.
Women’s Specialists of Plano offers mammography services in-house, preventing the need to schedule a second appointment or travel to a different location.
Pelvic organ prolapse
Women’s Specialists of Plano provides diagnosis and treatments for patients with displacement or descent of pelvic organs, including dropped uterus, bladder, vagina or rectum. Symptoms include:
- Pressure from pelvic organs pressing against the vaginal wall
- Feeling very full in your lower belly or if something is falling out of your vagina
- Feeling a pull or stretch in your groin area or pain in your lower back
- Pain in your vagina during sex
- Problems with your bowels, such as constipation
Treatment can be applied in several ways, depending on the severity and nature of the prolapse. They include:
- Changes to diet and fitness routine
- Inserting a device, called a pessary, which relieves symptoms
- Surgery, including pelvic floor reconstruction
Pelvic floor reconstruction helps restore the normal structure and function of these organs. They can be performed through vaginal incisions, a traditional abdominal incision or laparoscopically through a minimally invasive procedure.
Uterine fibroids
Also known as leiomyomas of the uterus, uterine fibroids are benign tumors of the uterine wall. They do not turn malignant but can cause problems, including pain or pressure, heavy menstrual bleeding and anemia. Fibroid tumors usually don’t cause problems with conception but can lead to pain during pregnancy, difficulty during delivery, and in rare cases, miscarriage.
Doctors at Women’s Specialists of Plano can remove uterine fibroids with a myomectomy, a minimally invasive procedure performed with a robot, laparoscopically or through the cervix. In cases where fibroid tumors become too large, a hysterectomy may be necessary.
