An Overview of Menstruation

The start of menstruation for most girls is a significant and meaningful experience. The arrival of a girl’s first period is the first small sign that she is becoming a woman. The medical term for menstruation is the shedding of the uterine lining which occurs monthly for most women. The most obvious symptom is bleeding from the vagina that usually lasts from three to five days. Most girls in the United States start menstruating around age 12 and continue to have a menstrual cycle until the onset of menopause.
