Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Overview
Polycystic ovary syndrome, also referred to as PCOS, is a hormonal condition caused by the collection of many small cysts found in the ovaries of a woman and leading her to experience a variety of different symptoms. PCOS can lead to irregular menstrual periods, obesity, excessive hair growth, acne and worse—a woman’s inability to get pregnant. Polycystic ovary syndrome treatment options typically depend on a woman’s age and her symptoms. For example, women who are having difficulty becoming pregnant might be prescribed a medication called Clomid to induce ovulation, while a woman who is experiencing acne or irregular menstrual cycles might be prescribed a low-hormone birth control pill.
