Prenatal Care Overview

In the United States, most pregnant women are fortunate to have good prenatal care, which ultimately will result in the birth of a healthy baby. Prenatal care refers to the medical care and attention a pregnant woman receives before and during her pregnancy. During her pregnancy, a woman should visit her doctor monthly for a weight check, a urine analysis, as well as for routine blood tests to determine if any medical conditions exist with her fetus. Pregnancy care usually becomes biweekly during weeks 28 through 36 and then weekly after week 36.  Vitamins, a healthy diet and moderate exercise should be incorporated into a woman’s lifestyle before she becomes pregnant and then maintained during the entire pregnancy.
