An Overview of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
There are many sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) that can affect a woman at any time while having unprotected sexual intercourse. Many STDs can be treated with medication, others can become deadly—but almost all are transmitted by bacteria, a virus or a parasite that enters the body and infects the skin and mucous linings of the vagina, as well as other areas of the body. The most common sexually transmitted diseases found in women are chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhea, herpes, trichomonas and the HPV virus. STD symptoms usually include vaginal discharge, itching, redness and odor and can also include a rash and other lesions, as well as fever. If a woman has had unprotected sex and experiences these symptoms, she should visit her gynecologist and seek medical treatment as quickly as possible.
